Live updates from Formula 1's Bahrain Grand Prix

F1 Bahrain Grand Prix

Live Commentary

By: Jake Boxall-Legge

And as the podium celebrations begin, we'll leave it there! See you next weekend for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Norris: "I didn't think I was that far forward (in the grid box). I made too many mistakes today with overtakes, was out of position, was a messy race for me and I'm disappointed not to bring home a 1-2 for McLaren. It's a tough one, but a few positives."

Russell: "It felt all under control, and then we had a brake by wire failure and the pedal went long, and then it was going short, so I didn't know what was going on. It was really hard to keep Lando behind, I think one more lap he would have got me."

Piastri: "We started the job yesterday, and to finish the job in style was nice. I'd have preferred not to have [the safety car] but I was still pretty confident. I also knew Lando and I were the only ones left with a medium, which was the tyre to be on."

Leclerc and Hamilton claim fourth and fifth, waved through by former Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo. Verstappen snatches sixth from Gasly, Ocon holds eighth from Tsunoda, and Bearman keeps 10th from Antonelli.

Oscar Piastri wins the 2025 Bahrain Grand Prix

Utterly dominant. Nobody could touch Piastri today, and he's crossed the line a full 15.5s clear of Russell, who just hangs on from Norris.

Final lap

It's the final victory lap for Piastri, who's been utterly unassailable. Norris probably fights too hard into Turn 1, which rather hurts his chances of making a pass on Russell into Turn 4.

Lap 56

Norris is right on Russell's tail now. These issues, and the soft degradation, has meant that Piastri is now over 12 seconds up the road from the Mercedes.

Lap 55

Norris is right on Russell's tail now, and is told he can only use DRS when he's sure he's within a second. More transponder issues, it seems.

Meanwhile, Gasly is having to fight hard to keep Verstappen behind him.

10-second penalty for Lawson

The Kiwi picks up a second penalty for causing a collision.

Lap 53

Norris gets his final track limits strike, while Gasly is told that he's forcing Verstappen to go off-piste while defending from his ex-team-mate. The Tsunoda train, meanwhile, has reached Esteban Ocon.

Lap 52

"Gears are ****, what's going on?" Russell asks over the radio. He's also got a potential investigation dangling over his head after using DRS at the wrong time.

Meanwhile, Norris puts a tidy move on Leclerc around the outside of Turn 4 - that's more like it from the McLaren driver, after laps of fussing.

Lap 50

Dudley: "There is a chance we lose the dash, if that happens just keep driving."
Russell: "Just as long as the steering wheel doesn't fall off."

He's managed to clear the Leclerc/Norris battle.

Lap 49

Norris is all over Leclerc, but gets shown the door at Turn 4 by the Monegasque as he attempts to go around the outside.

"I was fully alongside," he says on the radio, having felt Leclerc didn't give him room.

Lap 48

Stallard: "Remember to use the drink."
Piastri: "I would if it was working."

The Australian is 4.9s clear of Russell now, so he's rather seen off any chance of a post-safety car challenge.

Lap 47

The Doohan cork in the bottle has been moved aside, as Tsunoda, Bearman, Antonelli, and Albon have all made their way past the Australian.

Lap 46

Norris has a look at Leclerc but locks up into Turn 1 - so he's lost some time, but he's trying to catch back up.

Sainz is told to retire, and duly brings his car in. That's a big ol' hole.

Lap 44

Norris is right on Leclerc's tail now, who in turn is closing in on Russell as the Briton's soft tyres start to ail. Russell's transponder issues also appear to be affecting DRS.

Sainz also pits for softs; he's also afflicted with a big hole in his sidepod.

Lap 42

Lawson gets a penalty for causing a collision with Hulkenberg, and has copped a five-second penalty for it.

Meanwhile, Tsunoda's still stuck behind Doohan, who's a bit of a cork in the bottle for Bearman and Antonelli.

Lap 41

Piastri is 1.9s up on Russell, although the Briton's timing transponder is a bit all over the place at the moment. Leclerc is a further 1.6s behind, as Norris is just over a second behind.

Lap 39

Tsunoda thinks about a move on Doohan but bails - which gives Bearman and Albon a chance to take a look. The Red Bull driver just hangs onto 10th for the time being.

Lap 38

Verstappen puts a move on Ocon to move up to seventh, while Norris has now cleared Hamilton and is back up to fourth. "This tyre sucks," Hamilton says of the hard compound.

Lap 37

Norris lets Hamilton through, but sticks with him to try to repass - both Ferraris are on hard tyres. We've also got a replay of Sainz, who rather puts a divebomb on Antonelli at Turn 10 with a lock-up.

Lap 36

Restart time! Piastri drops the throttle at the final corner to stay ahead of Russell. Norris is all over Leclerc - who just hangs onto third, but gets boxed in and Hamilton briefly claims fourth. Norris retakes it at Turn 4.

"Lando passed me off the track," Hamilton contends, having grabbed fourth at Turn 2. Norris might be alright, but he's told to give Hamilton back the place.

"24 laps on the soft is pretty audacious", Russell says, typically. "I don't know what he's worried about, it's a mega tyre," Norris says.

Current order under safety car

1. Piastri, 2. Russell, 3. Leclerc, 4. Norris, 5. Hamilton, 6. Gasly, 7. Ocon, 8. Verstappen, 9. Doohan, 10. Sainz, 11. Tsunoda, 12. Bearman, 13. Albon, 14. Antonelli, 15. Alonso, 16. Hadjar, 17. Hulkenberg, 18. Lawson, 19. Stroll, 20. Bortoleto.

"Great job at the stops," Hamilton says over the radio - he's up to fifth.

Piastri makes a stop, and it'll be unsurprising if our front runners don't all come in to stop. Russell, Leclerc, Norris, Hamilton all make a stop, and Sainz and Tsunoda also follow suit. Gasly stays out, as he pitted earlier on.

Lap 32

Safety car deployed! Is this for debris?

Lap 31

Piastri's got a 6.8s lead over Russell, and growing; Leclerc, meanwhile, is continuing to close in on the Mercedes. He'll be in DRS range soon, surely.

Lap 30

A bit of contact between Sainz and Tsunoda at Turn 1 - the Williams driver is ahead, but the Japanese driver remains in DRS range.

Lap 28

Plenty more stops now: Gasly, Doohan, and Hadjar come in for the hard tyre.

Lap 27

Ocon and Antonelli make their second stops, with two very different approaches; Antonelli has softs, Ocon takes the hard tyre.

Lap 26

Hamilton now moves up to sixth with a DRS pass on Ocon. Gasly's next up on his list, albeit with a four-second gap to make up.

Verstappen takes the medium tyres, but gets a slow stop as the front right is slow off.

Lap 25

Leclerc gets the move done on Norris; he finds the outside road for Turn 4 and cruises round the outside. In the meantime, Hamilton clears Antonelli and he's now going after Ocon.

Lap 24

Leclerc bolts on DRS and puts a move on Norris into Turn 1, but the Briton finds a switchback and gets third back. Ferrari is looking feisty at this stage of the race; maybe the one-stopper wasn't the play after all.

Lap 23

Antonelli and Hadjar get shown the black-and-white flags, so they'll have to be very careful with the white lines.

Lap 22

Hamilton dives down the inside of Doohan for ninth, and starts to ratchet up the pressure on Verstappen. He gets the move done at Turn 11, which will bring Doohan back into play. Tsunoda might catch him too, at this rate.

Shout out to Ocon in this one: he's undercut his way to sixth place - and looks like he's staying there.

Lap 20

Antonelli puts a lovely move on Verstappen - he puts the Dutchman onto the inside for Turn 4, and then grabs the switchback for the downhill chicane. He's back up to P7, and Doohan might be shaping up for a move on Verstappen here too. "Everything is overheating," says the Red Bull driver.

Lap 19

Piastri has 3.1s over Russell, who in turn has 2.0s over Norris. Hamilton dispatches Tsunoda, while Leclerc clears Gasly - so Ferrari hasn't actually lost too much by stopping.
